What Are URL Parameters?
Simply put, url parameters are data points you add inside of a URL. Lets say your URL was:
www.example.com/landingpage?utm_source=Instagram&utm_campaign=happy
Everything before the "?" is your domain, and everything after is considered a URL parameter, aka: data we can pull.
The data we pull from this example is:
URL Parameters:
UTM Source = Instagram
UTM Campaign = Happy
URL parameters are ESSENTIAL to track where people are coming from.
You can add URL parameters to your ads (videos below) or custom URL parameters if you wish to track things like email campaigns, YouTube Organic tracking, etc.

Alright, ladies and gentlemen, we are going to be walking you through how to actually tag and track Facebook ad conversions. So, very simple, every single ad that you run needs to have these URL parameters right here. So I have copied and pasted this already inside of the Notion document. So again, that is in there. Make sure guys, you are taking this link, this whatever text, whatever you want to call it, copying it, and putting it inside of the URL parameters.
Now from there, every time you create a new ad, you can just duplicate the ad set, the ad should come along with it including the URL parameters. But again, guys, highly, highly, highly recommend, or not recommend, it's very important that you do this because if not, chances are there's going to be a lot of conversions that are not being tagged properly, which we will not be able to pick up on the back end.
And guys, from there, you're going to want to do this. So I'll exit this out, show you how I did this. You go to columns, you go to customize columns, you then come up, you search URL parameters. By the way, I highly recommend this is a media buying layout. So feel free to pause it and set yours up like this. It's a very great way from start to finish to get this all in there. And then I like to have this here. Hit apply. And then that way you know without, without fail, you can see the URL parameters in there every time so you know for a fact that it's being tagged.
Again, I'm going to stress the importance of this. If you don't do this, and you're going to be like other people who they run ads and they're not tracking this and they're not be, they're not keeping and paying attention to this kind of stuff, then they come and they bitch and they say, "Hey, your software is not tracking my stuff, this all sucks, what's not working, what's broken." We end up looking at the ads and it's not there. So again, please make sure you are tracking and tagging the conversions with this specific URL parameter setup. Again, copy it in the notes, and then I also recommend customizing your columns adding the URL parameters inside of there.
This guide will walk you through the essential process of tagging your Facebook Ads with URL parameters. Properly tagging every ad is critical for ensuring that all your conversion data is accurately captured and tracked. Without these parameters, there will be gaps in your data, making it impossible to see the true performance of your campaigns.
Step 1: Add URL Parameters to Every Ad
For tracking to work correctly, every single ad you run must include a specific set of URL parameters. This tells our system exactly which campaign, ad set, and ad a conversion came from.
When creating or editing an ad in Facebook Ads Manager, scroll down to the Tracking section.
Find the URL Parameters field.
Copy the complete parameter string provided below and paste it directly into this field.
It is crucial to use this exact text for accurate tracking:
utm_source=Meta-Ads&utm_medium={{adset.name}}&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}&campaign_id={{campaign.id}}&medium_id={{adset.id}}&content_id={{ad.id}}Pro-Tip: Once you set this up for one ad, you can simply duplicate the ad or ad set for future campaigns, and the URL parameters will be carried over automatically.
Step 2: Verify Parameters in Ads Manager
To make sure you never miss adding the parameters, you can add a specific column to your Ads Manager view that shows you the URL parameters for each ad at a glance.
In your main Ads Manager dashboard, navigate to the Columns dropdown menu.
Select Customize Columns... at the bottom of the list.
In the search bar, type "url".
Check the box next to URL Parameters.
You can drag and drop this new column to a convenient spot in your report view (placing it near the "Ad Name" is helpful).
Click Apply. You will now be able to see the tracking parameters for every ad directly in your dashboard, confirming they are set up correctly.

Alright, so in this video, you guys are going to get walked through how to actually tag your Google Ads conversions properly. So there are going to be two ways. The first way is to edit existing Google Ads campaigns. So the way you do that is you jump into Google Ads account, you hit Campaigns. You click on campaigns here, and then you hit this campaigns button here. And you have to hit settings, don't, like there's two looks to, or there's two views to this. We're not going to be hitting this campaigns button, we're going to be toggling on settings.
And then, you can either select one individually or select them all. Hit edit, hit change tracking templates, and then you're going to take the URL parameters that was given to you inside of the documentation, and you are going to add it here. This is the full tracking template. Again, landing page URL question mark, we got campaign ID, medium ID, content ID, and keyword. So those are the ones, and then you are going to hit apply.
So that is how you add it to an existing campaign. However, if you are creating a new campaign, let's just go ahead and walk you through how this is done. So it doesn't really matter what you guys choose here. We can continue. Again, it doesn't really matter. Search, video, doesn't matter. test.com. Hit continue. test, okay.
And then what we're looking for here is going to be the campaign settings. So when you go through, obviously do your bidding, do everything, but in campaign settings, you're going to have to hit more settings, and then we have the campaign URL options. Here, where it says tracking template, again, you're going to paste exactly what we gave you. You do not need to change this at all. This is dynamic, meaning it'll automatically populate for you. So all you have to do is just take the link that we have given you in the documentation and to paste it in here, and that is it. Again, it's not a new link, just one link, that's it. You paste it here. That's how you do it if you are creating a new campaign.
This guide will walk you through the two methods for adding the necessary tracking template to your Google Ads campaigns. Properly tagging your campaigns is essential for accurate conversion tracking. You can either update your existing campaigns in bulk or add the template when creating new campaigns.
Step 1: Add Tracking to Existing Campaigns
This method is ideal for quickly updating campaigns that are already running.
From your Google Ads dashboard, navigate to the Campaigns section.
Click on the Settings tab.
Select the checkboxes next to all the campaigns you wish to update.
A blue bar will appear at the top. Click the Edit dropdown menu.
From the list, select Change tracking templates.
In the "New tracking template" field, paste the entire tracking URL provided below.
Click Apply. Your campaigns will be updated in the background.
To ensure your Google Ads campaigns are tracked correctly, you must use the following tracking template. This dynamic template automatically populates the campaign, ad group, creative, and keyword data for you. The complete text to paste is:
{lpurl}?campaign_id={campaignid}&medium_id={adgroupid}&content_id={creative}&utm_keyword={keyword}Step 2: Add Tracking to a New Campaign
When creating a new campaign, you can add the tracking template directly during the setup process.
Begin creating a new campaign and proceed through the initial steps (choosing your objective, bidding strategy, etc.).
When you reach the Campaign settings page, scroll to the bottom and click More settings.
Click on the Campaign URL options section to expand it.
Paste the complete tracking template into the Tracking template field.
Finish setting up your campaign as usual.
